Neuromyelitis Optica

Etymology and Pronunciation

Neuromyelitis (Noo-roh-my-uh-LY-tis)
neuron - Greek for "nerve"
myelos - Greek for "marrow" or "spinal cord"
-itis - Greek for "inflammation"
Neuromyelitis optica (NMO), also known as Devic's disease, is a rare autoimmune disorder that affects the central nervous system (CNS). The disorder primarily damages the optic nerves and spinal cord, leading to vision loss, weakness or paralysis of the limbs, and loss of sensation.

The exact cause of NMO is unknown, but it is thought to be caused by an abnormal immune system response that attacks the myelin sheath, a protective covering around nerve fibers in the CNS. This results in inflammation and damage to the optic nerves and spinal cord.

The symptoms of NMO can range from mild to severe and may include sudden loss of vision or blurry vision in one or both eyes, difficulty with motor functions, such as walking or holding objects, and difficulty with sensation, such as numbness or tingling in the limbs. Symptoms may come on suddenly and worsen rapidly, but can also be intermittent or progressive.

Diagnosis of NMO may involve a combination of physical exams, blood tests, and imaging tests, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Treatment for NMO often involves immunosuppressive medications, such as corticosteroids, to help reduce inflammation and prevent further damage to the CNS. Other treatments may include plasmapheresis, which is a procedure that removes harmful antibodies from the blood, and rehabilitation therapy to help manage symptoms and improve quality of life.

While NMO is a chronic and potentially debilitating condition, early diagnosis and treatment can help manage symptoms and prevent further damage to the CNS. If you think you may have NMO, it is important to speak with your healthcare provider to receive proper diagnosis and treatment.
